Learning Portal - Faculty Toolkit: Course Reserves

Course Reserves

Faculty members often place items on reserve to help make limited physical resources available to their students. All types of items may be put on reserve. Books (library or personal), photocopies of journal articles, DVDssample exams, etc.

Physical reserve items are located behind the Public Service Desk on the main floor of the Learning Commons. Faculty members can choose a loan period from the Reserve Request form.

Students can ask Learning Commons staff for the reserve item to be signed out.

Reserve Request Form

How do I place items on reserve?

  • Submit a reserve request form for each course. Hard copies are available at the Learning Commons Service desk, or fill out the pdf form and email to to: learningcommons@nwpolytech.ca
  • Bring the items to be placed on reserve to the Learning Commons. If the items are from NWP, pull them from the stacks and turn them in with the reserve request form.
  • The reserve request form must be signed if you submit photocopied material, to ensure that it complies with ACCESS. COPYRIGHT requirements. You may contact the copyright librarian (Amanda Wills @ 2940) if you are unsure of ACCESS. COPYRIGHT requirements. It may be possible to offer your students online access (e-reserves) to journal articles (see Electronic Reserve)
  • Photocopies may be submitted singly or in a “course reading” binder that you supply. The binder system works well but it does limit the usage of the material to one student at a time. Photocopies may be submitted individually but please list each one separately on the form.

Electronic reserve

Faculty members also have the option of placing items on reserve electronically by adding them to their courses in MyClass (Learning Management System). Please contact Ben Driedger, Learning Designer (@2806) for more information.

When can I expect my reserves to be available for students?

Reserves are processed in the order of their receipt. We do our best to provide reserve items to students within 2 working days.
