IEEE Citation Style

Before you begin creating a works cited page or in-text citations remember these easy steps:

Step 1: Record

When you are reading a relevant document that you might use in your essay, or for your research, record all the descriptive information required to create a citation using the IEEE Citation Style. This will help you be prepared when writing your paper and creating your works cited page / reference page. Remember, the type of data you will need to record may differ depending on the type of source you are using.  

 Books

• Author’s surname / last name and initials or given name
• Book title 
• Title of series (if applicable)
• Volume number or number of volumes (if applicable)
• Edition
• Editor, reviser, compiler or translator (if other than the author)
• Publisher
• Place of publication
• Year of publication
• Page number/s (if applicable)

Journal articles

• Author’s surname and initials or given name
• Title of the article
• Title of the journal
• Volume and issue number
• Year of publication
• Inclusive page numbers
• Internet address (for e-journals)
• Date of access date (for e-journals)

Step 2: Organise

Make sure to stay organized by recording and storing your citation information, as well as the source documents if you have them, in a manner and format that is easily accessible. You can write all details on the print copy of an article you are using; or you may decide to maintain a  list, that includes relevant details, on your computer.
