What Is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of using another author's words or ideas and presenting them as if they are yours.

Intentional Plagiarism

  • Submitting a paper that you bought or downloaded
  • Getting someone else to write your paper
  • Cutting and pasting information to create your essay 
  • Cutting and pasting a sentence or two
  • Making up sources
  • Copying from a peer
  • Not putting quotation marks around other's words

Unintentional Plagiarism

  • Working too closely with a partner or group
  • Including sources in a bibliography without citing them in the text
  • Using material directly from your textbook to complete an assignment
  • Poor paraphrasing skills
  • Poor quoting skills
  • Poor citing skills

Not Plagiarism:

  • Using commonly known knowledge or facts.  For example, "Justin Trudeau is the Prime Minister of Canada."
  • Talking about yourself or your own completely original ideas/analysis.
